“Queerness is essentially about the rejection of a here and now and an insistence on potentiality or concrete possibility for another world.” -José Esteban Muñoz, Cruising Utopia: The Then and There of Queer Futurity
August 19, 2024 (New York) – Tala Arts is pleased to present Insistence on Another World, a group art exhibition that aims to embody the power and collective vision of queer and trans Black, indigenous, people of color (BIPOC) artists, and cultural workers.
The artworks featured in the show present a bold display of our community’s power, our acts of resistance, our unwavering pleasure, and our embodied reverence. All of the artists in the show share a practice rooted in the sharing of reflections, beliefs, philosophies, and imaginings informed by their specific legacies and cultural histories. This exhibition hopes to bring together artists who are in conversation with historical lineages, queerness, grief, joy, and spirit(s) in the midst of the material complexities of our present moment.
Insistence on Another World, curated by Marin Watts and Luce Capo Lincoln, will be mounted at My Gallery NYC, located at 587 Franklin Avenue in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. There will be an opening reception at the gallery from 3:00PM-8:00PM on Saturday, September 7, 2024. A closing reception will follow on Saturday, September 28, 2024 from 3:00PM-6:00PM.

" PERSPECTIVES ON WOMEN"
Traditionally, the portrayal of women was done by men - great beauties, queens, fine ladies, workers in the field, dancers, symbols of liberty, goddesses, all were portrayed by men. In modern times, women themselves have taken on this task. In this show we place the accomplished artist Robert V Reid, who often paints women, next to four women artists varied by age and background to see what emerges.

“RESURGENCE"
Welcome to “RESURGENCE”:
Featuring Robert Reid, an artist with a rich and colorful heritage from Trinidad and Tobago, brings to life the fluidity and grace of the human form through his art. Utilizing colors rooted in the vibrant culture of his birthplace, Reid’s work encapsulates the joy, laughter, and rhythm of his early experiences, translating them into captivating expressions of the human form. In his studio, Reid creates pieces that draw the viewer into an intimate dialogue with his subjects. His choice to limit background elements in his compositions is a deliberate effort to accentuate the complexity and subtlety of the human figure, a subject that he finds endlessly fascinating and superior to still life or landscapes. As he pushes forward on his artistic path, Reid remains committed to exploring and expanding this intimate, evocative dialogue with his audience, ensuring that each piece is not only seen but also felt and experienced.

TOMORROW’S VIG by Martin Eaton
“TOMORROW’S VIG by Martin Eaton”:
We're proud to present “TOMORROW’S VIG,” an examination of the unexpected prices humans pay traveling the roads of everyday life to find happiness.
Martin Eaton, the writer/art director, pulls nine stories from his forthcoming coffee table book of illustrated flash fiction for this three-day exhibition.
An unequivocal amuse-bouche, this author and creative tactician teases the audience with a distinctive art style for each of his nine genre-hoping short stories. Singularly, they offer a glancing emotional punch that lingers just long enough for you to realize you’ve held your breath—and then you’re whisked away. In an inexperienced hand, it would mirror annoying channel surfing, but his decades of directing creatives produces a dichromatic visual and narrative experience that feels purposeful and pleasurable.
It’s a unique expression that maintains it grip on the viewer for the solid thirty minutes required to complete his narrative tour. And to see his outward delight, palpable, watching each queued reader slow as they migrate to the next piece, lingering longer on the artwork so as not to repeat the false assumptions that betrayed them when they began, was a treat.
Finishing the collection, you realize you’ve let all assumptions go by the second or third to last piece and given yourself over to whatever emotion Martin wants to elicit in the next story. It felt invigorating and delicious. And never high brow.
“I’m not trying for soufflé…more an exquisite doughnut,” Martin admits. A sugary spritz to enjoy with our false courage as we walk out the door, arrogantly believing we’ve got it more sorted than his faux everyday heros and heroines. Until we misstep crossing the street, as he knows we will—and the Vig comes due.
Join us at My Gallery NYC to experience the playful and compelling stories of “TOMORROW’S VIG.”

"AT THAT AGE
"AT THAT AGE":
We're proud to present "AT THAT AGE," an exhibition that explores the depth and diversity of life in its seventh decade through the eyes of exceptional artists.
Anne Gilman's work is an intricate dance of chaos and order, a visual representation of her journey through the realms of writing, drawing, and mark-making. Her art invites us into a world where boundaries are blurred, and every mark tells a story.
Ann Hinds' pieces reflect a profound engagement with the complexities of life. Her exploration of confusion as a source of beauty encourages us to look beyond the surface and find meaning in the mysteries of existence.
Carey Clark's art is a narrative of interior reality, a collage that pieces together elements of psychological depth to contemplate our place in the world. Her commitment to storytelling through art has evolved over 25 years, marking her as a voice of introspection and insight.
Linda Hiwot's canvases are a vibrant testament to her mastery of color, shape, and composition. Each piece is a chapter in her visual diary, a narrative woven from the threads of personal experience and artistic exploration.
Patricia Broadbelt uses her art to connect with the past, transforming vintage photographs into works of dignity and respect. Her dedication to preserving the memories of her ancestors through collage and acrylics is a powerful statement of identity and heritage.
Join us at My Gallery NYC to experience the timeless wisdom and beauty of "AT THAT AGE."

"WALKING IN THE LIGHT”
“WALKING IN THE LIGHT”
This body of work is inspired by our search for light. It is also inspired by the life and openings of George Fox. George Fox was the founder of Quakerism. George Fox lived in England from 1624 to 1691. He was the leader of a group that formed The Religious Society of Friends in England in 1652. One of his core openings (message from God) was “That everyone can speak to God and hear Him speak, without any other human intervening.”
Light is energy, science tells us that energy cannot be destroyed it can only change into other forms of energy or matter. Light can cause chemical reactions, light can warm us, light can lead us out of darkness. Light causes photosynthesis that feeds the plants that feeds our bodies. When we walk in the light, we can find the way. We have souls which are energy. Therefore, we have energy within us. The universe or God is energy, we have a part of that energy within us.
Each of us has a unique reservoir of energy. Our unique energies can combine to create a greater universe of light. There are many paths to the light many ways of praying, meditating, listening to music, listening to children laugh or sitting in silence. We must find that inner path to find that which brings us joy. We must tap into this reservoir to find peace, joy, and the ability to live in this complicated world.
This project is made possible in part to funding from the New York Quarter Testimonies grant.

"THE PLACE WE LIVE"
“THE PLACE WE LIVE”
As we journey through life, the notion of 'home' evolves. It shifts geographically, demanding our adaptability. Yet, there exists a constant – our mind. Within it’s confines, we reside, traverse, and thrive. The mind, a repository of our thoughts, beliefs, memories, emotions, preferences, and aversions, defines our essence. It is not just where we are, but who we are. The images we manifest onto our chosen mediums are reflections of our inner dialogues and self-perceptions.
In "THE PLACE WE LIVE" exhibition, participating artists, Patricia Fabricant, Ed Grant, Darla Ebanks, Louella Jones and Doba Afolabi delve into their creative realms, drawing inspiration from past experiences while keenly attuned to the ever-evolving present. Here, the internal landscapes of our minds are externalized, offering statements of identity that resonate with the viewer.

"SEEDS AND MEMORY" Asian Diaspora Reimagined.
We are thrilled to announce an experimental show—"Seeds and Memory"—that brings together installation art, performance, and community engagement in an array of Asian diasporic voices. At its core lies the forthcoming artist's book, "Seeds and Memory: Asian Cookbook," which explores food as the clandestine tongue of the diaspora, acatalyst for sisterhood, and a subversive force challenging the undervaluation of culinarytraditions and their role in shaping racial and cultural hierarchies.
The Installation as Futuristic Temple
The magic unfolds at My Gallery NYC from October 24th to 29th as the space metamorphoses into a mesmerizing tableau accentuated by neon lights, videos, and textiles suspended from the ceiling. The Installation is a time-travel experience and an embodiment of narratives, social comments, and identities.
Communal Altar & Community Engagement
In the spirit of collective creativity and heritage, we are curating a communal altar—an installation dedicated to our collective ancestry. Artists come to co-create this symbolic monument each day between 2-5 PM, with materials thoughtfully provided for this creative endeavor. Furthermore, on October 26th, from 7-8:30 PM, the community is invited to participate in the co-creation of the altar—a collaborative act that breaks down barriers and fosters unity.
The Performance
Our week-long series culminates in a striking performance on Saturday, October 28th, from 7-8:30 PM. In this evocative session, writers/performers will sit beside their neon-lit installations, telling their stories to each other and the audience. The movement will dance with words, and art will merge with the intangible, culminating in an Asian ritual by Lead Collaborator and Director Fei Li, alongside writer Aurvi Sharma and artist Rabiga Marx.
This project is sponsored, in part, by the Greater New York Arts Development Fund of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs (DCLA), administered by Brooklyn Arts Council, and is fiscally sponsored by the New York Foundation for the Arts.

GETT OFF THE WALL
This July, My Gallery NYC will be holding "The Michael Jackson and Prince 'Get Off the Wall' Art Show 1," a solo exhibition by Brooklyn-based visual artis Chic. The upcoming art show pays tribute to the expansive careers of two music luminaries — Michael Jackson and Prince — who earned the nicknames the King of Pop and His Royal Badness, respectively, by marching to the beat of their own drum. The show, located at 587 Franklin Avenue in Brooklyn, runs from July 15 to July 20 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., with an opening reception set for July 15 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
With an array of artworks that feature portraiture, sculpture, and more, Chic spotlights Prince and Michael Jackson's unforgettable showmanship; bold and influential fashions; dynamic album art; electrifying music videos; and lyrical symbolism over the years. The show's title is a playful combination of two songs recorded by the subjects: "Gett Off" by Prince and "Off the Wall" by Michael Jackson.
"My goal is to bring a visual concert to viewers by using three-dimensional elements, various textures, and creative outtakes associated with both multifaceted entertainers," says Chic, a longtime fan of both late icons, and an artist indelibly inspired by music.
Chic's artwork has been displayed around the U.S., including The Ali Cultural Art Center in Pompano Beach, Florida; The Sacramento Fine Arts Center in Carmichael, California; and the Fulton Art Fair in Brooklyn, New York. His paintings have also been included in online art galleries affiliated with institutions such as Medford Arts Center in New Jersey and Crossroads Art Center in Virginia. AMERICAN HISTORY
Unveiling a striking testament to the resilience of African American history, My Gallery NYC. Cordially invites you to commemorate Juneteenth through the evocative lens of our featured artist, Larry Weekes. Deeply committed to encapsulating history through his art, Weekes offers a series of poignant drawings that chronicle the tribulations and triumphs of African Americans. Each stroke of his artwork bears witness to the profound suffering, yet at the same time, celebrates the monumental contributions made by these brave individuals. Their efforts and enduring spirit have become the very bedrock upon which our nation proudly stands.
Join us in this thought-provoking exploration of our shared past. Through Weekes artistry, we shine a spotlight on the less recognized aspects of our history, boldly naming the injustices, akin to diagnosing a malignancy. In doing so, we believe that the first step towards collective healing is embracing the whole truth.
This Juneteenth, let's honor the past, acknowledge the present, and envision a brighter, more inclusive future. Together, let us foster an environment where the voices of all Americans are heard, their experiences acknowledged, and their history appreciated.

"TIME & PRESSURE"
As artists, we are constantly tuned in to the inner call to create, even when the final product remains a mystery to us.
When faced with time constraints during the creative process, our innate motivation can diminish, causing us to rely on familiar methods rather than embracing the intuitive, exploratory nature of creation.
In this exhibition, the artists skillfully navigate the interplay between their inner drive and external influences, showcasing individualized expressions that balance time and pressure, aesthetics and substance, and the timeless versus the contemporary.

Doing is a collection of actions informed by our thoughts. Thoughts shows the awareness of being intuitively or conditionally informed, resulting in a knowing that is transposed to a medium.
As artists, we keep interest in our own creations. We speak and listen knowing that everyone's story is in constant change, evolving into who we are today, open to the change of tomorrow.
In this exhibition, these artists: Emmett Wigglesworth, Larry Weekes, Sasha Chavchavadze, Brian Branch, Jean Dominique Volcy, Ba Djibril Ngawa, Beverly Watson, and Darla Ebanks present as they express their understanding of their own doing, being and becoming.

Opening Reception: March 4th, 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM
Exhibition: March 4th to March 18th, 3:00 PM - 7:00 PM
Empowerment Avenue, Fulton Art Fair, and the Brooklyn Quaker Meeting are pleased to present “She Told Me Save the Flower,” an exhibition of paintings, drawings and writing by Corey Devon Arthur. The exhibition enables Corey Arthur, who has been incarcerated since 1997, to express an important message of healing. A lifelong visual artist and prolific writer, Corey has created a series of feminist portraits dedicated to a group of women who have profoundly changed his life for the better. The exhibition, presented at My Gallery NYC in Crown Heights, Brooklyn during Women’s History Month, speaks to the power of feminism to heal a patriarchal carceral system that relies on brutality and oppression. Corey has a vision for this exhibition that he expressed to us through his JPay messaging communications and phone conversations over the course of several months. We were simply acting as conduits, following his instructions, and full credit can be given to Corey Arthur for conceptualizing and realizing this project. His words and images speak for themselves.

SIGHT / UNSEEN
SIGHT /UNSEEN.
The evocative and experiential work in the exhibition ranges from the finely nuanced repetitions in Emily Berger's paintings, to Nancy Manter's paintings influenced by natural phenomena, to the collaged colors and shapes in Carl Hazlewood’s work, to Anne Russinof’s floating gestural forms. Trokon Nagbe presents an elegiac wall panel made of copper and candles, and AV Ryan's sensuous, geometric drawings in steel center the space.
Featuring artists:
